Not sure if this book has been mentioned before - Deep Survival, Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why - Laurence Gonzales.

The author spent a large part of his researching the psychology of how people survive, in all sorts of situations, mountains, flying, sailing, skiing, snowboarding (and transferable to other situatons). His findings agree with what Ennio has written above, and Laura previously, and there is a lot, lot more.

Highly recommended (and includes a lot of Stoic quotes too).

I've read this recently, and I agree -- it's a very good book. He has a couple other books I'd like to read as well:

I really enjoyed Deep Survival. He had many mountain stories in it. I hiked the Colorado Rockies for years and got into some scary situations at times, though not as severe as the stories he tells. So could relate to much he was saying.

It's good to think about "what if" situations while I am reasonably comfortable. And it's fun to think about and plan what I will do when tough times come.

Thanks to all for the links to Ray Mears. I wasn't familiar with his work. His videos have some good survival ideas and filmed in interesting, beautiful locations.

I found these videos on how to make simple oil lamps. Most of these ideas are cheap and quick. I'm going try a few of these ideas and familiarize myself with the process and what works best etc., and then make a few extra to keep in the cupboard as a back-up for this winter. In the mean time it'll save a few bucks on candles.

In the first video, if I heard him correctly he said the little bottles were plastic. I personally would use glass, but it's good to know plastic can be used if necessary.

Thank you very much for another great show! It's a lot of information to digest, but learning is fun, and energizes too! Now I will start reading the thread about Preparedness.

Second, a lot depends on your attitude and intent. Laura has mentioned more than once that if we decide to make ourselves available and useful to the universe (and those around us), it can have a nonlinear effect. And as was mentioned on the show yesterday, trying to prepare with an attitude of exploration and learning rather than fear will probably facilitate that -- unexpected things will undoubtedly happen, but if we try to align with the universe in a positive way -- with the intent to help others and not just save our own skins -- it may open the door for opportunities that we can't presently anticipate.
